Preserved, dried, or live moss: which one to buy

What each finish is, where it works, and how to care for it.

3 min read · Easy

Sheet moss and mood moss come in more than one finish. The finish changes how the moss looks, feels, and lasts, so pick it by project.

Dried moss

Dried moss is harvested and dried, and it keeps its natural color. Ours is undyed.

  • Good for: seasonal décor, wreaths, table runners, pot top-dressing, and terrarium ground cover.
  • Indoors or out: both.
  • Feel: drier and a little crisp. Mist it lightly before you shape it if it's brittle.
  • Care: like any natural material, it can fade in strong sun over time.

Preserved moss

Preserved moss is treated so it stays soft and flexible without water or light.

  • Good for: moss walls, framed moss art, and centerpieces you plan to keep.
  • Indoors or out: indoors only. Rain, steam, and direct sun shorten its life.
  • Feel: soft and springy.
  • Care: never water it. Some preserved moss is dyed and can bleed color if it gets wet. Each of our labels lists the dye status once the harvester confirms it.

Live moss

Live moss is for planting in a garden or a closed terrarium, and it needs the right light and moisture to grow. We don't sell live moss online yet.
